
On Friday, August 23, the UF Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics held its fourth annual department retreat in the Roland T. Stern Learning Center at the UF Austin Cary Forest Campus.
The Keynote Speaker
Joseph R. “JR” Haywood, PhD, a professor in Michigan State University’s Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and the assistant vice president for regulatory affairs, was this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Haywood is also an alumna of the UF Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics.

The Oppelt Award
Another highlight of the retreat was the announcement of the 2019 Walter Oppelt Distinguished Trainee Publication in Pharmacology & Therapeutics Award.
This award, supported by the Walter Oppelt Memorial Fund, is an award recognizing an outstanding published research manuscript authored by a trainee in a Pharmacology & Therapeutics lab. The winner receives a $500 and his/her name in added to the Oppelt Award plaque.

This year’s winners were Marta Quadri, PhD, and Betty Wang, PhD. Dr. Quadri is currently a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratories of Dr. Roger Papke and Dr. Nicole Horenstein. Dr. Wang was a graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Brian Law prior to receiving her PhD in August 2019.
