Fall 2019 Department Defenses

This fall semester, our department was extremely proud to host three defenses: David Fireman,Dimitri Koutzoumis, Joe Flores-Toro. We are so proud of all our graduating students! Check out more about their defenses below.

2019 Department Retreat

On Friday, August 23, the UF Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics held its fourth annual department retreat in the Roland T. Stern Learning Center at the UF Austin Cary Forest Campus.

Thesis Defense: David Fireman

David Fireman, whose mentor is Nikhil Urs, Ph.D., will be defending his master’s thesis called “Optimizing Neuronal Circuit Tracing of Midbrain Dopamine Neurons.” The defense will take place at 11 a.m. in ARB R5-265.

Final Defense: Joe Flores-Toro

One of our Ph.D. candidates, Joe Flores-Toro, will be presenting his final defense on Thursday, Oct. 24. His defense is called, “Targeting CCR2-Expressing Myeloid Cells to Overcome Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Resistance in Glioma.” He has worked within the laboratory of Jeffrey Harrison, Ph.D.

Final Defense: Dimitri Koutzoumis

One of our Ph.D. candidates, Dimitri Koutzoumis, will be presenting his final defense on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 9:30 a.m. His defense is called, “The Role of Gut Microbiota and Bacterial Metabolites on Dopamine Neuron Vulnerability.” He has worked within the laboratory of Gonzalo Torres, Ph.D.

Research Seminar: Luigi Puglielli, MD, Ph.D.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Luigi Puglielli, MD, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health will be presenting a seminar titled, “The Endoplasmic Reticulum Acetylation Machinery and the Control of Proteostasis: from Biology to Therapeutics.” It will take place at 11 a.m. in R5-265.

Research Seminar: Leah Reznikov

On Wednesday, September 11, Leah Reznikov, PhD, of the University of Florida’s Department of Physiological Science will be giving a research seminar titled, “Dissecting the Airway-Nervous System Interface in Health and Disease.” This will take place at the Academic Research Building in room R5-265 at 11 a.m.
